Oncohematological diseases and absence of register of hemopoietic stem cells (that was created only in 2009, but did not satisfy needs of Ukrainian patients in donor samples) were the prerequisites for development of cord blood banks in our country. Accordingly, transplantation of allogenic hemopoietic stem cells which is needed by about 1500 our compatriots is accessible only abroad while the costs of such a treatment makes about 200 000 Euro. At the same time in Ukraine, about 50 tons of cord blood which is the source of these cells are simply thrown away.
And this is despite the fact that the methods of cryo-storage of cord blood are available, and Ukrainian research institutions have elaborated a huge methodical basis for practical introduction of cell technologies. Moreover, few people know that Ukraine has probably the very first experience in cryo-storage of cord blood in Europe, since the first European cord blood bank was established in Ukraine in1984. The first reports on application of cord blood by domestic scientists are dated by the 30-ties of the last century being unprecedented in the world practice. The service of personalized storage of cord blood in Ukraine is accessible for already more than 5 years.
Personnel and technology potential for transplantation of hemopoietic stem cells is available at Kiev Center of Bone Marrow Transplantation, the Center of Radiation Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, and the Republican Center of Children’s Hematology and Transplantation of Bone Marrow.
In the area of application of cord blood components, Ukrainian scientists even leave behind their western colleagues. In Ukraine, a program of surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases in children with application of autologous cord blood has been functioning for more than a year. This program has been implemented by the Theoretical and Practical Medical Centre of Children’s Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the family bank of cord blood «Hemafund», Kiev city maternity hospital № 5, and Kiev city maternity hospital № 7. Cardiac surgeons of the Theoretical and Practical Medical Centre of Children’s Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery have developed an unique method of operative treatment of newborn children with diagnosed in prenatal period congenital heart diseases which employs his/her cord blood during the operation on his/her heart.
More than 30 newborns have been operated during one year of functioning of the program. «Hemafund» contributes to the program by performing a complex of procedures on processing and preparing of cord blood components for surgical operations. In more details
In 2010, collaboration with A.P. Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was organized, that resulted in a joint work on a project of cord blood application during operations in newborns with congenital malformations of central nervous system (spina bifida). Use of cord blood in young patients has confirmed in another time a high quality of «Hemafund»’smethod of processing and cryo-storage. This method preserves th vital activity of cord blood active components. We hope that in future, the Institute of Neurosurgery will extend the list of pathologies which will be treated using cord blood processed and stored in «Hemafund».
All the costs of the works on cord blood processing for its use in operations at the Theoretical and Practical Medical Centre of Chilren’s Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and A.P. Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery.in the case of the named pathologies are fully covered by «Hemafund».
Today, stem cells are obtained from different sources. Cord blood, bone marrow, peripheral blood, adipose tissue are actively studied by leading Ukrainian theoretical and scientific institutes. Scientific developments of Gusak Donetsk Scientific Research Institute of Emergency and Reparative Therapy are known all over the world. In 2008, pulsing heart cells were obtained at this Institute. In 2008, a doctorate work “The influence of transplantation of tissue culture of the pancreas and stem cells on pathogenesis of experimental diabetes” was performed at Gorkij Donetsk National Medical University and at Gusak Institute of Emergency and Reparative Surgery. The results of the Ukrainian scientist demonstrate reasonability of transplantation of pancreas tissue cultures and hemopoietic stem cells for correction of the type1 diabetes.
